  • Hackerman Uses Prosthetic Arm to CV Interface and Make Music With His Mind.

    From my anecdotal limited experience working with one armed artists, they tend to take things a bit further. Having gigged a few shows over the years with DJ Don Tinsley, I think that adversity often becomes a driving force and motivator. Hell, outside of being a legendary deep house DeeJay, he was a semi-pro vert skater… like comon’ one armed vert?

    You see it outside the arts too: someone climbing Mt. Everest with peg legs what have you… it just always seems like there’s a whole uppity “anything you can do, I can do better attitude” that comes with it, and I for one am sick of it. It’s like these one-armed bass bandits just can’t be content swimming in circles and letting us help carry their groceries so we feel better about ourselves. NOPE, they just barge into two-hand-man-land doing a thing better resulting in embarrassment for the rest of us in our otherwise safe able-bodied spaces. 

    Hakerman Bertolt Meyer here has a kick ass bionic arm but now uses it to control his modsynth’s CV with his brain. It’s cheating and should be banned from the otherwise fine sport of synthesis!

    Together with Chrisi from KOMA Elektronik and my husband Daniel, I am in the process of building a device (the “SynLimb”) that attaches to my arm prosthesis instead of the prosthetic hand. The SynLimb converts the electrode signals that my prosthesis picks up from my residual limb into control voltages (CV) for controlling my modular synthesizer. The SynLimb thus allows me to plug my prosthesis directly into my snythesizer so that I can control its parameters with the signals from my body that normally control the hand. For me, this feels like controlling the synth with my thoughts. I show the prototype(s), explain how we put it together and how it works, and do a little demo

    One of those feel-good inspirational joints right here. Bamanya Brian was just chilling in Uganda doing the usual Uganda stuff and decided to get into the notoriously prohibitive realm that is modular synthesis. Being Uganda this presents a smidgen more of a challenge for him. Heck, even in most the first world, it is so this really serves as a mod-ivatonal post…. see what I did there? Fine, i’ll stop…

    A few months ago I dipped my feet into the world of modular synths. The entire African continent has a handful of shops selling Euro rack modules which is really sad. Also, Euro rack modules are overly priced for someone in my context. My only option was to go the DIY route. I looked up schematics and started modifying some circuits and building others from scratch. All parts in my modular were sourced locally. In a few months I have learnt so much about electronics and analog synths and I have built what is an almost decent modular synth. I believe this is Africa’s first home made modular synth. I hope this video inspires someone out there to build their own synth

    Let that sink in. “a few months ago”. Colloquially a few is three so let’s just go with four. Four months ago Bamanya found a blog and just started sourcing parts locally from trash and shady pop up stores, dodging warlords, burning his fingers soldering, laying low from Ebola and reading up circuitry all that fun bedroom R&D shit and now he is no longer Bamanya he is A F R O R A C K!

    If he didn’t name it Afrorack someone else would of so even that’s perfect. During this same 4 month period he not only built it he got really good with it too. Clearly has a deep connection to his rig and it slaps…

    Having learned his way around with some funky Detroit inspired acid now moving more into forward territories heavily influenced by his own native culture..

    And he’s touring the world now he’s even in Europe thanks to our pals over at CDM currently banging the Afrorack. Only small criticism I can think of is that I’d like to see to the Arturia beatstep covered in mud and grass to tie it all together for motifs sake but hey, believe in your dreams whatever they may be in the face of adversity with enough hardwork and determination and they might just come true.   • Adventures in Eurorack Case Staining

    Alright, so you got modsynth case and you don’t want it looking like some Ikea but you also don’t have money or carpentry skills for more then Ikea cause you waste all your time and money on modsynth in the first damn place. Oddly there’s a lack of information about this specific subject too. Doepfer case is said to be fir wood not on their site but some unconfirmed word of mouth rando. You ever stained fir? I sure haven’t but if it is in fact fir it’s a German fir and historically things can get out of hand fast when Germans involved and well at these prices pardon my apprehension about slinging around chemicals all willy nilly.

    I poked around online, picked brains irl and I was getting different suggestions all over. Tutorial for anything else made from same or similar wood as your case? No way! You think I got time to look for torrents of “This Old House” with Bob Boomer Vila THEN watching all 41257412579 episodes of em only to get to 2 seconds of him wood staining a fucking banister in a house my generation can’t afford with that old-school toxic fume shit that ain’t even legal anymore cause linked to folks having flipper babies?

    Hell naw and doubt they would be well seeded torrents anyways so buckle up buckaroo cause here’s a guide of the route I took.

    Step 1: take your rails out with a #3 Allen

    If already installed then don’t bother with removing bus boards and power supply. Waste of time and you might damage it along the way. No ones ever going to see in there anyways. Take brand/serial plates off it too cause the stain collects behind them and it could damage them. Dopfers are just 4 Philips.

    Step 2: Pre-Stain

    Pre-stain is super important. I did tests with and without. If you don’t pre-stain you will have splotches. 32oz can is like 10 bucks and you won’t even use half unless you Hans Zimmer but you HAVE to use this if you want it to turn out without it looking like shit. Very easy to apply use a brush or rag (use an old tshirt microfibers suck with wood) to really cover it good. Fully cover and saturate the wood. Dipping it into a big vat of the stuff whist reading Saul D. Alinsky would be ideal to give an idea how liberal to be with the stuff, comrade. Let it dry takes like half an hour. Rotate it around and do it again. Throw another coat on it too even. Wipe up and in and around excess along the way. Wait for dry.

    Step 3: Danish Oil

    The cool thing about Danish Oil is it is like 3 in 1. Stains, seals & protects. There’s no polyurethane needed. That shit smells forever too so avoid it. You can wipe more on it any time you want if scratched or whatever. This is the brand I used I don’t know if others are better or worse. Bunch of different shades. Home Depo. Like 10 bucks. You could go with half that size if available. Brush or rub it. I did both. Says two coats but I just did a good thick one. All in all it was pretty painless and there really wasn’t much fumes. There’s an odor but it’s not bad enough to worry about pets and shit. Toss the rag outside and clean brushes soon as possible to lower fumes it’s not that bad to do inside though.

  • Berhinger Clone Megapost

    I’ll update this post on the regs cause so much yet so little going on this year with Berhinger. In their quest to avoid any innovation, destroy livelyhoods of small boutique makers already doing better clones and pissing off snooty collectors that have originals (my favorite part) figured I’d start curating an article (containment post) to consolidate ever evolving pertinent things roland sys100 clone related and other developments, news etc…. oh why even stop there. I’ll just put other shit they cloning in here too.

    Maybe they only starting with roland, ARP, moog and Oberhiem then working their way up to Jurassic Park IRL or even clones of Morgan Freeman to install at every Walmart nationwide as the door greeters… the year is young still after all.

    I get both sides of the argument and feel that overwhelmingly it’s a net postive filling this market for the accessibilty factor alone for now but can’t help but wonder where the lines will be drawn. Their legal is likely sweating but their engineers are wearing Hawaiian shirts and working half days ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Buchla Covered In LSD at UC East Bay

    It’s not every day a long standing legend becomes confirmed truth. Having lived in the East Bay for some years around the electronic music scene it was certainly a campfire topic ie: The Merry Pranksters and specifically The Acid Freak Out Parties of the 60s were really something different then today’s sort of electronic shows. Sounds would be very unstructured. While capable of sequencing no one used them that way at those events. Footage of the proper Acid Freak Out Parties is extremely rare but from what little I have seen they were more comparable to noize or punk shows than flower child tropes or modern rave. A haunted house for extreme psychonauts would best summarize.

    What could only be called mad dosers would spray bottle it on people. Stand behind fans so it blows out even further. People knew what they were in for and these events were not for everyone. They were literally Called “Acid Freak Out Parties” after all. For lights they would just use a couple crappy filtered par can lights and a film projector. Darkness was more of the light. It would get on everything and everyone. The more people freaked out the better. No one can really confirm (yet) that this specific Buchla 100 was used at them but it’s a pretty safe bet and this discovery it raises more questions then it answers.

    The 156 Control Voltage Processor can blend, invert and mix up to 6 different CVs. It’s the only bright colored module on the system. Was the LSD only behind that module or was all over all of them? If it was only that one my guess would be it’s because that’s an easy way to hide and transport it but it could also of been a prank for the future. It’s thought to be legendary Owsley Stanley LSD too. Why on earth would the music department let a Buchla 100 rot in the back of a closet? Are Sasquatches real too? 2 things are certain.     “SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — For years, an urban legend circulated online and in documentaries, purporting how part of a groundbreaking musical instrument — versions which are stored at a Bay Area university and other institutions — was dipped in a psychedelic drug.

    Online chatter detailed how musicians who used the instrument would wet their finger, touch the device, and then lick their finger to get a little bit of mind-expanding inspiration.

    Now this supposed myth may turn out to be a reality.

    At the helm of KPIX Television, Broadcast Operations Manager Eliot Curtis tackles all sorts of technical problems to keep Channel 5 on the air. Recently however, a strange electrical transmission threw him for a loop. It happened inside his brain.

    “It was … felt like I was tripping on LSD,” remarked Curtis.

    It turns out that Curtis was indeed tripping on the infamous psychedelic drug known as lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD for short. He got dosed by accident at home in his workshop — in front of his wife.

    “I think it’s super wild. I think this whole situation is a nice chapter in the history of the counter culture,” commented Curtis’ wife Holly.

    Late last year, Eliot volunteered to fix a vintage “analog music modular instrument” owned by the music department at Cal State University East Bay.

    The instrument — commonly known today as a synthesizer — was commissioned by two leading avant-garde musicians who taught in the music department in the 60s. Cal State East Bay was then known as Cal State Hayward. The men who secured the funding were Professors Glenn Glasow and Robert Basart, two men were at the forefront of the burgeoning Bay Area modern music scene.

    “It’s definitely a piece of history,” commented musician Joel Davel.

    “Yeah, [they were] looking for new ways of creating sound,” explained Ines Thiebaut, Assistant Professor of Music at Cal State East Bay.

    But the modular analog synthesizer device eventually fell out of favor, into disrepair and was stored in a cool, dark place for decades.

    “It was in a closet in the corner of a classroom, which was a little sad because it was like a shipwreck,” remarked music composer and retired professor William R. Shannon, who remembers composing on the device when he was a student.

    At one point, the device was likely augmented with additional modules, including a red-colored module on the top row. During his repair work, Curtis opened the module and saw something stuck under a knob.

    “There was like a residue … a crust or a crystalline residue on it,” said Curtis.

    He sprayed a cleaning solvent on it and started to push the dissolving crystal with his finger as he attempted to dislodge the residue and clean the area.

    About 45 minutes later, Curtis began to feel a little strange. He described it as a weird, tingling sensation. He discovered this was the feeling of the beginnings of an LSD experience or trip.

    The sensation lasted roughly nine hours.

    Three individual chemical tests identified the substance as LSD. A well-known LSD researcher and expert who asked to remain anonymous told KPIX that LSD can remain potent for decades if kept in a cool, dark place.

    The expert also informed KPIX that one can ingest the chemical through the skin under the right conditions. He noted that the Swiss scientist Albert Hoffman, who was the first person to synthesize and ingest LSD, wrote in his memoirs that he believed he accidentally ingested the drug through his skin.

    It turns out this machine has deep roots to the west coast counterculture. It’s called a Buchla Model 100, and it was created by the late Don Buchla of Berkeley.

    “I call him the Leonardo Da Vinci of electronic music design.” remarked Suzanne Ciani, known as the “Diva of the Diode” and an acknowledged pioneer in electronic music. Ciani worked with Buchla in the late ’60s and ’70s when she was a grad student at University of California, Berkeley.

    Ciani recalled how the Buchla 100 was developed in the 60s when Berkeley was the epicenter of political and social unrest.

    “It’s no accident that he developed his unique ideas in this crucible of upset and chaos in Berkeley,” noted Ciani.

    In 1966, some Buchla modules ended up on an old school bus purchased by LSD advocate Ken Kesey and his followers known as the Merry Pranksters.

    During the last of Kesey’s acid tests — LSD-fueled parties — at Winterland on Halloween in 1966, electronic sounds, possibly from the Buchla, appeared to interrupt an interview of Kesey.

    Buchla used LSD and was friends with Owsley Stanley, the genius behind the Grateful Dead’s sound system. Stanley, also known as Bear, was a masterful sound engineer and legendary hero of the counterculture. He was also famous for making the purest LSD to ever hit the street and kept such a low profile that not many photos of him exist.

    Author/photographer Rosie McGee, who had uncommon access to the Dead, managed to capture a photograph of the elusive Stanley in 1968. McGee and her intimate, early-days portraits of the band are historic and revealing. Her personal memoir “Dancing with the Dead – A Photographic Memoir” sheds light on the San Francisco Music Scene of the 60s and early 70s, and provides context and detail to the era in which Buchla and Stanley lived.

    Another picture of Owsley taken by legendary photographer Jim Marshall captured him at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival which helped usher in what would be called the “Summer of Love.” In this rare photo, Owsley is seen behind the influential Indian musician and sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar.

    As to how the LSD ended up on the red modules?

    “There were a lot of legends,” said Davel, who worked for Buchla for more than 20 years and is now the lead designer and engineer for Buchla USA.

    There are few facts available to come to an understanding of why LSD ended up on the red module handled by the KPIX engineer. Buchla and Stanley are both dead and no public records exist to shed any light as to where the modules originated. On the Buchla 100 at Cal State East Bay, some modules were added and did not come with the original commissioned device. Close friends tell conflicting and confusing stories.

    Was the red module used to stash the drug? Did an accidental spill result in the drug seeping through to the circuitry or was it a source for chemically-induced and mind-altering inspiration?

    No one knows. Even so, Ciani said what happened to Curtis is astonishing.

    “It’s a bit like time travel,” said Ciani. “If you could go back that would be the way to go there. That is, to share the drugs that everybody took at that time.”

    After his strange trip, Curtis — wearing gloves — finished repairing the vintage Buchla. The instrument is now back at Cal State East Bay and ready for music students to explore.

    The device has no keyboard. You play it by turning knobs and patching cords. It can move sound around a room. The students on hand were mesmerized. Some told us that they were blown by its design and craftsmanship .

    “This will open your mind, you know?” said CSUEB student Adam Hughes, laughing. “Sometimes I think the LSD will open your mind too.”

    One final note: there will be no more trips with this Buchla. The instrument has been thoroughly cleaned of all LSD.”
